provide a template for uploading spreadsheets from a computer.
Every time I try to upload an excel file with collection data I get an error message. I have tried editing the file as the troubleshooting section says, but without some type of template for how it should look I am not sure how to fix it.

Sorry you are having this trouble! Getting excel files to work can be a little tricky sometimes. There are just a bunch of strange things that can be going on below what excel is showing you.
There is an example .xls file that should work for you linked from the import page. http://viewshare.org/import/ so if you go there, and download the example spreadsheet that should work for you as a template.
Now aside from that, here is a small blurb from the user guide with guidance on excel files.
"Simplistic Excel spreadsheets may be used to get data into Viewshare, but every version of Excel's proprietary format cannot be supported. Currently, .xlsx files are not supported, so be sure to re-save the files in an .xls version for upload. By "simplistic" spreadsheets, we mean that a single worksheet can have contiguous rows and columns that form a rectangle. This "rectangular spreadsheet" can have blank columns to the left and right and an optional title and subtitle at the top, as long as they are in single cells.
Best results will be obtained from data files of 1MB in size or smaller. Larger amounts of data will result in significant time delays or even a failure to load the data set."
There are still files that conform to those general principles that don't work. I have had a lot of luck in troubleshooting those files by 1. Saving them as .csv and then 2. Opening the .csv file and saving it back to a .xls (This generally has the effect of removing the strange excel stuff that lurks beneath the surface).
Hope that helps!
